Alternatives
A hub-and-broker alternative to Mattr.
Mattr ships strong VC APIs. Thoryn ships an OAuth 2.0 / OIDC hub that wraps the same OID4VC primitives — and drops in front of Auth0 or Okta as an upstream IdP. Here's the honest comparison.
Side by side
Thoryn vs Mattr
The honest version. We say where they're better, too.
| Axis | Thoryn | Mattr |
|---|---|---|
Data residency Thoryn is structurally EU-only. Mattr offers regional deployments via AWS but is NZ-headquartered. | EU-only (Hetzner Germany) | AWS multi-region (NZ HQ; EU regions available) |
CLOUD Act exposure NZ is part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement; AWS-hosted regions are also subject to US disclosure orders. | Zero — Dutch incorporation | Indirect — AWS dependency, NZ Five Eyes member |
OAuth 2.0 / OIDC authorization server Mattr is a VC platform — it issues and verifies credentials but is not a general-purpose OIDC IdP. | — | |
Hub-as-upstream-IdP for existing Auth0 / Okta Thoryn drops into Auth0/Okta as an upstream OIDC connection (see hub-in-okta and hub-in-auth0 recipes). Mattr requires the relying party to call Mattr APIs directly. | — | |
VC issuance (OID4VCI) | ||
VC verification (OpenID4VP) | ||
SD-JWT VC | ||
mdoc / ISO 18013-5 | ||
ARF 1.4+ relying-party conformance Mattr has a longer track record in EU pilots; Thoryn is conformant but newer to that surface. | Tested against NL + EU reference wallets | Mature — used in EU large-scale pilots |
Pre-built Auth0 / Okta integration recipes | — | |
Wallet SDK (consumer-side) Mattr's wallet SDK is more mature and has reference apps in production deployments. | iOS + Android Wallet SDK | iOS + Android Wallet SDK + reference apps |
Trust framework / EBSI conformance | Trust Registry product; EBSI conformance roadmapped | Broad scheme support; deep EBSI involvement |
Pricing transparency | Three public tiers, contact for quote | Contact-sales only |
NIS2 / DORA evidence pack | On request |
When Thoryn is the better fit
- You need verifiable-credential support inside an existing Auth0 or Okta deployment without leaving your IdP — Thoryn rides as an upstream OIDC connection
- EU data residency is a yes/no question your security review needs to answer
- You want one product that handles both OIDC brokerage and VC issuance/verification, not two stacks to wire together
- You'd rather drop a recipe than wire APIs — the Auth0/Okta integration paths are pre-built
- You're a regulated EU buyer and CLOUD Act exposure (including via Five Eyes / AWS) needs to be answerable
When Mattr is the better fit
- You want pure VC issuer/verifier APIs and have already built (or want to build) your own auth layer
- You're operating primarily in APAC / NZ markets where Mattr has strong distribution
- You need the most mature wallet SDK and reference-app ecosystem; Mattr's wallet tooling has more production miles
- Your team has deep VC engineering and prefers API-level building blocks over a hosted hub
- You're already participating in an EBSI large-scale pilot where Mattr's pedigree is the deciding factor
